Principale scopo del Progetto ENSPIRIT era la realizzazione di un pre-prototipo di aftertreatment per locomotori diesel in grado di abbattere le emissioni di NOx > 75% and PM2.5 > 98% senza l'ausilio di urea.
L'Area Combustibili di Innovhub-SSI era Responsabile del WP5 System Testing e del WP6 Validation.
E' stato ideato un protocollo sperimentale utile ad implementare le attività di entrambi i WPs su autoveicoli diesel in laboratorio.
Il pre-prototipo è stato disegnato, dimensionato e realizzato ad hoc per essere inserito nel LEA (Laboratorio Emissioni Autoveicolari) del Laboratorio Emissioni e testato sui due autoveicoli sperimentali di Innovhub-SSI ed ha raggiunto un'ottima efficienza finale di abbattimento sia sui NOx che sul PM2.5.

The aim of this work is the definition of a pilot test procedure to carry on the system testing and validation tests with a locomotive engine aftertreatment pre-prototype called ENSPIRIT system, developed in the framework of the FP7 European Project Eliminating NOx, SOx& Particulate in Rail Transportation. Here it is described the study, processing and definition of the test procedure. A study has been conducted investigating the legislation (both European and US EPA) dealing with emission standards and tests for locomotives, gathering the fundamental information to create a driving cycle, suitable for tests with passenger cars, taking into account the main features of the locomotive test cycle. The first version of the ENSPIRIT Driving Cycle (EDC) has been tested in laboratory with two 2.0 l diesel experimental vehicles in order to refine it to better reproduce the locomotive test procedure, in particular with respect to notches duration, speed and rpm increase. The refined and definitive version of the EDC has been tested as well and the obtained results are here reported. The developed EDC was then inserted in a pilot testing protocol whose aim is to determine, through the EDC laboratory execution, the ENSPIRIT pre-prototype effectiveness in reducing the emission of NOx > 75% and the emission of PM2.5 > 98%. This can be done comparing the emissions of the two experimental vehicles, deprived of all the emission abatement systems (DPF, EGR, Oxy cat), with and without the use of the ENSPIRIT pre-prototype.
Setup and validation of a pre-prototype aftertreatment system aimed to reduce PM2.5 and NOx emissions from locomotive diesel engines

In the ENSPIRIT FP7 European project framework a locomotive diesel engine aftertreatment pre-prototype, due to real-world testing difficulties, was realized directly downscaled and adapted for an automotive emissions laboratory testing. It is here reported how its NOx and PM2.5 abatement capabilities were determined testing two diesel engine passenger cars deprived of all abatement systems. With the first car the setup and performance of the ENSPIRIT® pre-prototype were optimized using several analyzers, even providing size distributions of ultrafine particles: final emission reductions, calculated in g/bhp-hr, of NOx by ~90% and of PM2.5 by ~60% were reached. The pre-prototype NOx and PM2.5 abatement capabilities were then validated with the second car and results have been compared with the ones from U.S. EPA Tier 4 non-road emissions standard. It was found a NOx emission reduction by ~90% and by ~50% for PM2.5, confirmed as statistically significant by applying the Student’s t-test.
